Get Involved

Fantastic opportunities to get involved with York Archaeology at JORVIK Viking Centre.

How to Get Involved

You can get involved as a short-term placement or as a volunteer for longer ongoing involvement.

Have you got a passion for history or archaeology? Would you like to help us engage visitors with York’s rich archaeological heritage and share a love of the past?

The JORVIK Viking Centre showcases the rich discoveries of the five-year Coppergate excavations which dug through 2000 years of history and offered unmatched detail of how people lived and worked in the Viking Age.

Our JORVIK Collections Up Close Volunteers help us tell the story of the dig, its rich archaeological discoveries and what it told us about Viking life in York. Volunteer involvement offers visitors enhanced access and engagement with our collection through the use of volunteer-run ‘Collections Up Close’ opportunities; chances for visitors to view and discover more about objects from this incredible excavation.

Who Can Join?

As with many of our roles you do not need existing archaeological, historical or guiding knowledge or experience, we will help you to learn everything you need to know. We welcome expressions of interest to join the team from anyone with enthusiasm for history or archaeology and a desire to contribute their time to enhance our visitors’ experience.

When Can I Enquire?

We welcome new volunteer involvement via set intake periods each year. These offer an opportunity to join the team in the company of other new volunteers as well as lots of training and support along the way. We are not currently accepting applications for Volunteers.

You will have a chance to read our Privacy Notice before applying to volunteer/undertake a placement with us. You can also click here to read this.

JORVIK Collections Up-Close Placements learn how to engage with visitors about the archaeology of the Coppergate excavation. Through two archaeological collections they offer enhanced visitor access and engagement to our unique collection and the rich archaeology of the dig.

The 2-week placement opportunity is great for someone who would like involvement in our Collections Up Close role but might have difficulty committing to regular volunteering over a longer period, or who wants to gain experience in archaeological and heritage interpretation at JORVIK Viking Centre over our busy summer period.

We are not accepting applications for placements.
