Indulge in the history of gingerbread

Did you know that gingerbread was once used as a tool to help children learn their alphabet? Or that William Wordsworth had a particular penchant for gingerbread? Join food historian Sam Bilton with a glass or two of spiced ale and a selection of historic gingerbreads as she mulls over the secret history of this sweet treat.

Prior to the pandemic Sam hosted a historically themed supper club called Repast from her home in Sussex and has given presentations and cookery demonstrations at various historic locations across the country. Sam recently published her first book on the history of gingerbread which includes 80 delicious recipes for this popular teatime treat. You can find examples of her work at or on Instagram @mrssbilton
