Try your hand at a staple craft of the Viking home with our beginners’ spinning kit and interactive crafting discussion.

Spinning plant and animal fibres would have been an unending task for York’s Viking settlers, due to the vast quantities of thread are required in order to weave fabric. Finds related to fibre preparation and thread production were found in the world-famous Coppergate Dig in large quantities and far outnumber the finds which relate to fabric production, suggesting spinning was a task at the heart of daily life for our past Viking residents.

The price includes a kit delivered to your home (UK addresses only) with a drop spindle and a selection of traditional wool samples to turn into your very own yarn, following along with the enclosed pamphlet and exclusive instructional video content.

Then, join Erin and Jenni (aka Arnleif and Ermingard) for a fascinating look at the tools and techniques used to prepare and produce yarns at Coppergate, with a chance to ask your own questions about the evidence for exploring this absorbing Viking craft.
