Are you interested in the history of York? Do you ever imagine what games the Roman citizens of York were playing 2000 years ago? Have you ever thought about what someone might have snacked on whilst watching a theatre show during the Second World War?

If the answer is ‘yes!’ (or ‘no’ but now you’re intrigued…), come along to one of York Archaeological Trust’s Saturday drop-in events taking place across the city in five Explore York libraries during July and August. You’ll get the opportunity to explore a selection of objects, that have never previously been displayed, from our vast collection of finds discovered on excavations across the city. Members of our Collections and Community Engagement teams and volunteers will be on hand to share insights into the objects on display and invite you to discover stories that reveal the people and history of York from the Roman period to the present day.

But that’s not all!

We want to hear from you about your stories and memories of the people, places and events which have shaped your part of the city and made it your York.

We are inviting you to bring along your own objects, stories or memories to the Sharing Stories events that reveal the experiences you, your friends and your family have of living in York. This could be a response to some of York’s places and people, a personal recollection of more recent events, or a family story linked to memories of past lives in the city.

We would love to record these through photography and written or spoken statements to help us build a picture of York’s personal and community histories for future generations. Submissions will be added to a bank for us to consider for future display in a new digital space and/or our community exhibitions.

We look forward to welcoming you and sharing stories about the people of York past and present!

Please be aware that, whilst we know many national restrictions have been lifted, we want vulnerable people and those awaiting vaccination to feel safe and confident to visit our drop-in events. Our staff and volunteers will therefore be wearing face coverings unless exempt. We kindly encourage visitors to our events to consider wearing face coverings, sanitise their hands and respect others’ space whilst engaging with our staff and volunteers.

Information on accessibility and facilities at each library can be found on their website here. For information about the events please contact our Community Engagement Assistant, Katrina Gargett, at or on 07553 628144.
