York Archaeological Trust is throwing open the doors to its facility on Huntington Road to showcase their impressive collection of finds from over 2,000 years of the city’s history this summer.

Amateur archaeologists and local history buffs are invited to a special tour of York Archaeological Trust’s Archaeological Resource Centre and explore York’s fascinating history through the unique objects housed within.

“Our team always look forward to showcasing our collection to visitors on these special open days. From Roman samian ware and Viking combs to Victorian roof tiles and even a toothpaste container, there are so many stories that these objects can tell us about the lives of our ancestors.”

Commented Christine McDonnell, head of Collections and Archives at York Archaeological Trust, the parent charity of the world-famous JORVIK Viking Centre.

With so much to see visitors will be taken on a guided tour of the building by a member of the curatorial team, giving attendees a rare and detailed look into the processes of archaeological conservation and the rich stories the artefacts can tell us.

This is the third year that YAT are offering these special tours of their Archaeological Resource Centre, which is located on Huntington Road, just outside the city centre, and this year they are partnering with both the University of York’s Festival of Ideas in June and the national Festival of Archaeology in July, giving visitors more chances to discover this intriguing building and the fascinating objects held within.

Behind the Scenes with York Archaeological Trust is taking place at the Archaeological Resource Centre, 421 Huntington Road on Thursday 15th June and 27th July with two tours on each day starting at 10:30 and 2:30pm. Tickets are priced £6.50 per person and can be purchased online at www.jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk/whats-on.
