What is Coppergate Memories?

Between 1976 and 1981, hundreds of amateur archaeologists helped out at the Coppergate Dig and more than a million people came to see the dig for themselves. The memories of some of the leading figures in the dig have been recorded ahead of the reopening. Together, with old photographs and video footage, they will be used to bring the excitement of the dig itself to life.

The Community team at JORVIK Viking Centre wants to hear from the amateur archaeologists who helped out on the dig as well as the memories of the people who came to see it. The memories and photographs submitted will be collected together on the website to provide a permanent record of the 1970s origins of the Viking Centre.

If you have great memories, stories to tell of the dig or any of your own photographs, get in touch by email at memories@yorkat.co.uk.
