Bloodaxe Book Challenge

The book challenge, supported by Explore York Libraries and Archives, tasks children with reading four books between October and January.

The Bloodaxe Book Challenge is now in its 7th year, and is a partnership between the JORVIK Viking Festival and Explore York Libraries and Archives. This year’s challenge runs from 27th October 2018 until 12th January 2019. Children of all ages can participate for free at any of York’s libraries.

The Bloodaxe Book Challenge aims to encourage York children to improve their literacy by reading books and making use of their libraries. Participants can sign up at their local library, where they will receive a Book Challenge bookmark. They must read 4 books to successfully finish the challenge. For each book completed, they will receive a sticker. This year, participants have the option to read a 5th book, for which they will receive a ‘bonus’ sticker!

On completion of the challenge, each participating child will be rewarded with a certificate and one child’s ticket to visit the JORVIK Viking Centre. Each child will also be entered into a prize draw to win a ticket to a special JORVIK Viking Festival event with this year’s Book Challenge author, Tony Bradman. The event will be taking place at York Explore on Wednesday 27th February 2019, during the half-term holiday.

The official book selection for 2019 is ‘Anglo-Saxon Boy’ by Tony Bradman, winner of the Historical Association’s 2018 Young Quills award for historical fiction.
