Young readers are encouraged to take part in a literary battle as part of the JORVIK Bloodaxe Book Challenge!

The book challenge, supported by Explore York Libraries and Archives, tasks children with reading four books between October and January.

The Bloodaxe Book Challenge has now run for 9 years, and is a partnership between the JORVIK Viking Centre and Explore York Libraries and Archives. Children of all ages can participate for free at any of York’s libraries.

The Bloodaxe Book Challenge aims to encourage York children to improve their literacy by reading books and making use of their libraries. Participants can sign up at their local library, where they will receive a Book Challenge bookmark. They must read four books to successfully finish the challenge. For each book completed, they will receive a sticker.

On completion of the challenge, each participating child will be rewarded with a certificate. Each child will also have the chance to attend a special online JORVIK event in February 2021 with the year’s Book Challenge author, Paul Tillery IV, author of the ThunderCluck! books, which tell the story of the Norse god Thor’s chicken, a bird with the power of thunder and lightning!

Copies of both ThunderCluck! titles, including special bookplates signed by the author, will be available from mid-November from the JORVIK Viking Centre shop, or online at https://www.jorvikshop.com.
